Nipissing Culture Days is launching an Inaugural Monthly Healing Drum Circle live on Saturday Sept. 19 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. This free, all ages outdoor event invites everyone to come to the green space behind the North Bay Museum as the Farmer’s Market wraps up. The event will celebrate the power of music, dance and culture to bring people together during crisis and celebrate the spirit of togetherness. The Healing Drum Circle will feature Justine Gogoua, an international artist and percussionist. Join Gogoua and friends for drumming and dancing to begin the upcoming cultural events being featured throughout Nipissing Culture Days in September and October.
“The idea is to help our community get back on their feet and out of isolation,” said Gogoua. “It will give people a chance to express themselves, relieve stress and regain a sense of community, even with social distancing,” she continued.Giant puppets will dance to the drums to signify coming together and growing stronger as a community.“In Mali, Africa, giant puppets are a very rich part of culture. By wearing a giant puppet you are free to speak your mind and put your message out there,” said Gogoua.Joining Gogoua in leading the drum circle is Herve Mility, an international percussionist and actor. Mility has reason to celebrate having welcomed a son to the world on Sept. 15 named Beni, meaning blessed.Ivory Coast native and percussionist Giselel Gbohou will be playing an ancestral, traditional instrument which is “rare like a whale,” according to Gogoua.
